Veterinary Lab Assistant - Mon-Fri - 4pm-12a

Schedule: Mon - Fri - 4p-12a

Veterinary Lab Assistant duties:

  • Receive, process, and label samples accurately and efficiently. Ensure proper storage and handling of samples to maintain sample integrity.
  • Prepare samples for analysis according to established protocols and procedures. This may include centrifugation, aliquoting, and other sample processing techniques.
  • Perform diagnostic tests using IDEXX Lab equipment and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • Proficiently operate microscopes to examine slides for cellular abnormalities, microorganisms, and other diagnostic indicators. Maintain the cleanliness and proper functioning of microscopes.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the laboratory workspace. Keep supplies stocked and ensure equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Monitor quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and precision of test results. Take corrective actions as needed to address any deviations from established quality standards.
  • Communicate emergent results to veterinarians in a timely and accurate manner. Provide necessary information and support for interpretation of diagnostic findings.
  • Record and maintain detailed documentation of laboratory procedures, test results, and quality control measures. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with other members of the veterinary team to provide comprehensive patient care. Assist veterinarians and technicians as needed in other aspects of patient care and treatment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to always communicate professionally and effectively and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in sample handling and diagnostic testing.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, walk, bend, twist, reach, push and squat most of the workday.
  • The ability to frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds with or without accommodation

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a veterinary laboratory setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Proficiency in operating IDEXX Lab equipment and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • Experience with blood smear preparation, microscope use, and interpretation
