Overview:
As a Veterinary Oncology Registered Technician at Wake Veterinary Medical Center, your role is integral in supporting our Oncologist in the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of cancer in our animal patients. Your primary responsibility will be the safe and effective administration of chemotherapy while ensuring the safety of yourself and your team. Each patient and their owner come with unique needs, and your knowledge, compassion, and communication skills will help ease owner anxiety, offering them hope and support throughout their pet's treatment journey.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Oncologist in daily operations.
- Obtain detailed patient histories and perform patient triaging.
- Skillfully place IV catheters and conduct venipunctures or central line placement.
- Capture high-quality radiographs.
- Assist in and provide support during ultrasounds.
- Perform and analyze basic diagnostics, including laboratory sample testing.
- Prepare and administer chemotherapy, adhering to safety protocols.
- Operate the chemotherapy hood effectively.
- Accurately calculate and understand chemotherapy dosages and conversions.
- Provide comprehensive patient care, including diagnostics and treatments.
- Educate and communicate with clients, including managing callbacks and delivering results.
- Maintain accurate and detailed clinical records.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Registered Veterinary Technician (experience in oncology is a plus!).
- Previous experience as a Veterinary Technician or Assistant is required.
- A strong desire to learn new skills, particularly in chemotherapy and oncology.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and be a dependable team player.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50+ lbs. without assistance.
- Capability to stand and sit for extended periods.
- Compliance with OSHA, AAHA, and chemotherapy safety standards.
- Proper use and adherence to all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Emotional resilience in handling challenging cases and interacting with clients.
