Veterinary Technician - Internal Medicine

Job Summary:

The Veterinary Technician - Internal Medicine is responsible for assisting veterinarians in the diagnosis and treatment of animal patients with complex internal medicine conditions. This role requires a deep understanding of veterinary internal medicine, strong technical skills, and a compassionate approach to patient care.

Duties:

  • Provide veterinary nursing care to stable patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.
  • Report patient signalment, problem list and plan during nursing rounds.
  • Calculate basic medical math.
  • Understand classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects and appropriately monitor therapeutic response.
  • Administer medications via appropriate routes and duration.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • Triage and obtain patient history.
  • Assist clinician with diagnostic procedures.
  • Patient care including treatments.
  • Prepare prescriptions and communicate discharge orders to clients.

Skill/Abilities:

  • Proficient in diagnostic testing and laboratory procedures.
  • Proficient in calculations (drugs, constant rate infusions, unit conversions, etc.)?
  • Strong understanding of veterinary pharmacology and internal medicine.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to patient care.
  • Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and support staff to provide cohesive and comprehensive patient care.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and restrain animals of various sizes and weights.
  • Comfortable standing, walking, and bending for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to handle medical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to lift, walk, bend, twist, reach, push and squat most of the shift.

Education & Experience:?

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a veterinary clinic or hospital, with a focus on internal medicine.
  • Veterinary Certification preferred
